WASHINGTON, USA (Bloomberg): Hanesbrands Inc., the underwear maker spun off by Sara Lee Corp., will shut three Dominican Republic plants in September that employ 1,400 people.
Expenses of about $3 million are expected from the plant closings in Itabo, Dominican Republic, the Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based company said in a statement released on the Business Wire.
Hanesbrands is consolidating sewing production into larger, more efficient facilities, according to the statement. On March 29, the company announced it would close a Winston-Salem factory that employed 610 workers, at a cost of about $16 million. That production was shifted to the Caribbean and Central America, the company said.
All Itabo workers affected will get severance pay, according to the statement. A call to the company seeking comment wasn't immediately returned.
