Trinidad and Tobago firmly on track to host CHOGM 2009

Email To Friend Print Version | PORT OF SPAIN, Trinadad: At the end of a visit to the Commonwealth Secretariat to discuss the state of planning for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2009, Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma said, “A year away from CHOGM, Trinidad and Tobago remains firmly on track to host a very successful event.”

The visit, which took place in London between December 3rd and 5th, was conducted by the National Coordinator, Ambassador, Luis Alberto Rodriguez and Senior Coordinator, Sharifa Ali-Abdullah. The team gave an update on logistical and technical work undertaken by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago for CHOGM 2009.
Ali-Abdullah held roundtable discussions with senior officials including Deputy Secretary General Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba and the Head of Political Affairs Matthew Neuhaus.
Ambassador Rodriguez presented to a packed conference room at Marlborough House where almost all of the 53 member states were represented as well as senior officials from the Commonwealth Secretariat. Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma opened the session and those present said they were “impressed with the progress”.
Additional meetings were held with: the Secretary General on substantive issues, Palace Officials on the visit of Her Majesty the Queen and organizers of the Civil Society Forum, the Business Forum and the Youth Forum. These fora will take place ahead of the Meeting of Heads of Government.
Officials from the Foreign Commonwealth Office were also encouraged by the state of readiness and offered assistance and cooperation.
The Planning Mission proved successful in a number of areas including: confirmation of timelines for key activities, engagement of member states and sharing Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment and readiness to host CHOGM 2009. | | | | Reads : 708 | | | |
