SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic: American Major League Baseball (MLB), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Peace Corps have signed an historic alliance with six Dominican non-profit organizations to benefit the poorer communities in the Dominican Republic.

The alliance proposes to use baseball as a catalyst to improve the lives of the less fortunate in the Dominican Republic. Baseball is the passion of the Dominican Republic and is played everywhere, especially in the poorer areas as an outlet for youth frustrations.

USAID will contribute $1 million to the project, and other donations are expected to follow. Robert Fannin, the US Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, and Joe Garagiola, Jr, MLB Senior Vice President, announced the alliance during a ceremony held at the ambassador's residence in the capital Santo Domingo. Many former local players attended the event including Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz and Robinson Cano.

The six non-profit institutions that are participating in this event, World Vision, Save the Children, Plan International, the Dominican Institute for Integrated Development, Esperanza International and the Batey Relief Alliance, have previously and continue to provide much needed community services to the poorer areas of the Dominican Republic.
