GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Veteran Guyanese journalist, Paul Persaud, who was popularly known as “Paul O'Hara”, died Thursday afternoon at the age of 93, following a prolonged illness. According to his relatives, Persaud was, up to several days before his death, still writing articles for a television show.

In a statement, the Guyana Press Association (GPA) said it has indeed been a very trying time for the media fraternity, for within the past two months several members have passed away.

“Mere minutes today after the benediction was read at the Brickdam Cathedral to end a moving funeral service for Stabroek News journalist, Angela Osborne, veteran newsman Paul Persaud, also known as 'Paul O'Hara', passed away,” the press release said.

“It has indeed been a very trying time for the media fraternity for within the past two months we have buried several of our comrades. The Guyana Press Association takes this opportunity to exhort us all to be watchful for we know not the hour when our souls will be called to rest,” the GPA said.

According to the GPA, Persaud was a household name in Guyana in the field of journalism. He worked for a number of local and international media organizations during his years in active practice. Among other places, Persaud visited the Berlin Wall in Germany. He worked at the now defunct Guyana Broadcasting Corporation and also the French Press Agency (AFP).
