GEORGETOWN, Guyana (GINA): Guyana said it is making good its commitment to strengthen and build capacity within the health sector with the most recent advancement being the addition of five locally trained surgical doctors.

The graduates who completed their post-graduate surgical programme received their diplomas at an official graduation ceremony held at the Ocean View Convention Centre, Liliendaal. They are expected to begin their surgical careers at hospitals across the country shortly.

Minister of Health Dr Leslie Ramsammy during the awards presentation congratulated the graduates for successfully completing the first post-graduate programme. He urged that they be recognized as pioneers.

He said there are several others in the programme and it is his hope that more doctors will come on board.

Dr Ramsammy said the programme is a great accomplishment for the country since the health needs of the people will be met.

Chief Executive Officer, Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Michael Khan told the graduates that it is not the end of their journey since the impact of their contribution will not only be dependent on formal training but also their personal values, attitudes and seeking medical assistance in spite of better remuneration.

Khan said it is the administration’s plan to initiate and continue programmes which will lead to post-graduate diplomas in anesthesiology and orthopedics.

Dr Robert Taylor, a surgeon of University of British Colombia, Canada who delivered the keynote address highlighted the key elements for surgical care which include competency, creditability, compassion, craftware, continuing education, communication and collaboration.

He said surgery is a profession and it is expected that surgeons should be proficient in the execution of their duties and practice within the required standards.

Meanwhile, to mark the completion of this programme, a Medical Scientific Conference was held earlier yesterday where local and foreign doctors were given the opportunity to present their findings from medical research. The conference was held for the first time in Guyana.
