Suriname Red Cross hosts training in disaster preparedness

Email To Friend Print Version | PARAMARIBO, Suriname: The Suriname Red Cross hosted a one day training session in communications last month in Paramaribo.
The training was facilitated by Allison Ali, Information Officer from the Caribbean regional representation officer (CRRO) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (International Federation). A cross section of 23 people from different professional backgrounds, including media personnel and Red Cross volunteers, attended the training to improve and enhance their communications skills as well as get a better knowledge of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement.
Some of the issues addressed included the fundamental principles of the Red Cross media communications, photography, marketing the Red Cross and writing articles among others. The training was part of the Red Cross’ disaster preparedness programme.
Elinor King, disaster management programme officer said the training will facilitate the participants to deal with different communications issues as they arise in emergency situations and even on a daily basis.
“While the training was done to equip the participants with communications skills during emergencies, they will also be able to use the knowledge gained in all Red Cross activities,” Elinor said.
Cedric Best, one of the media participants at the training said: “I learnt a lot from the training and have a better understanding of the Red Cross Movement and dealing with the media.” A
