HAVANA, Cuba (ACN): Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva arrived in Cuba on Thursday for a visit aimed at expressing Brazil’s solidarity with the people and government of Cuba, following the damage inflicted on the Caribbean nation by the recent passage of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

On behalf of Cuban authorities, the vice-president of Cuba’s Council of Ministers Ricardo Cabrisas welcomed the Brazilian President at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport.

In the context of the visit by Lula da Silva to Cuba, the companies Cubapetroleos, of Cuba and Petrobras Middle East B.v., a subsidiary of Brazil’s Oil Enterprise Petrobras, will sign a contract on hydrocarbon production. Also on the agenda is the opening in Havana of a branch office of Brazil’s Investment and Export Promotion Agency (APEX).

President Lula da Silva is also scheduled to hold official talks with Cuban President Raul Castro.

With over 8.5 million square kilometers, Brazil is the biggest country in South America. It borders with Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guyana to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Uruguay to the south and with Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru to the west. Brazil’s capital is Brasilia. The huge country has 191 million inhabitants and its official language is Portuguese.

Brazil and Cuba established consular relations in 1906 and full diplomatic relations in 1943, with embassies in both countries. Such relations were broken by the Brazilian government in May 1964 and resumed June 26, 1986.

Since the re-establishment of full diplomatic relations, both countries have boosted bilateral exchange, which has been strengthened during the presidential term of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who paid his latest official visit to Cuba last January and presided over the signing of significant agreements between both countries.
