Letter: The 25th anniversary of the invasion of Grenada

Published on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

The 25th anniversary of the invasion of Grenada quietly passed here in the United States, however it was not forgotten. As a past visitor of the beautiful and friendly island, I was recently disappointed to learn that the government of Grenada was looking to build a monument to honor the Cubans that were killed during the invasion.

To build such a monument would dishonour those Americans and members of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States that served, died, or were injured. It is also an insult to the people of Grenada who could've been under the ruling control of the Castro brothers for the past 25 years.

Those in favour of a monument for the Cubans forget that there were 700 on hand, including advisors from the Soviet Union, North Korea, East Germany, Bulgaria, and Libya. Are you sure these were people worthy of any respect?

Grenada, like most other nations, has its share of problems today. But it is a free and proud country that has overcome many obstacles to be the island of spice and a welcoming beacon to tourists.... something it would not be if the Cubans had stayed.
