Email To Friend Print Version | HAVANA, Cuba: The Tridents of Barbados bounced back to skewer Suriname in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory in the opening fixture of Group G in the Digicel Caribbean Championships last night.
Barbados has never lost to Suriname in international football and, armed with that knowledge, approached the first half with history on its side. Its first assault on the Suriname goal came in minute 6, when a thunderous free-kick from Norman Forde narrowly missed the top corner.
Suriname responded well in minute 20. Clifton Sanlivet broke through the middle and found Sergio Aroepa who rounded the keeper before being dispossessed by a goal-saving challenge from Barry Skeet.
A carbon copy of the previous chance came a minute later with Forde finding Aroepa once more, only for Aroepa to swing and miss from point blank range.
Suriname sprang a surprise in minute 33, when Wensley Christoph capitalized on a slip from left back Bryan Neblett. Christoph cut a pass into the D for the advancing Sandlivet, who powered his shot past Adrian Chase in goal.
Just nine minutes later, an upset looked likely as Hesron Jeroe was allowed too much time in the midfield to assess Barbados’ defensive frailties. Jeroe opted for the pacy Aroepa once more and this time there was no denying him as he outpaced his man and had Adrian Chase in goal chasing the ball in vain.
The second half began much the way the first did, but surprisingly Barbados coach Thomas Jordan didn’t make any halftime substitutions despite the two goal deficit.
Jordan, however, made a change in minute 50 that forever altered the game. The introduction of John Parris, their most experienced campaigner and the only member of the squad that has ever played on Cuban soil, immediately focused the Barbadians and paid dividends just after the hour mark.
25 yards from goal, two Barbadian players hovered over a free-kick; a nudge from Rashida Williams got the ball rolling for Norman Forde, who struck sweetly, scorching the surface as the ball skidded into the net. 2-1 and Barbados were back in the hunt.
Three minutes later, another set-piece proved the undoing of the Suriname side, Rashida Williams was once more involved as his looped cross was headed in with power by Norman Forde to take his tally to two and level the score.
Suriname never really threatened after the second goal and it came as little surprise when Barbados took the lead for the first time. The combination of Williams and Forde proved unstoppable as Williams’ corner was tamely punched out by Ronny Aloema in goal, only for it to land perfectly at the feet of the one man Suriname didn’t want it to. Forde was once again perfectly positioned and volleyed well to give Barbados the go ahead goal.
Forde had never scored a hat-trick before and to get one in such crucial circumstances and in just eight minutes meant that Barbados could play the remainder of the game at their own pace. The Barbadians turned their attacks up to frantic in search of a better cushion, but despite the Tridents best efforts, Ronny Aloema refused to allow any more goals and was outstanding in keeping the Barbadians at bay.
Suriname got one final chance to level the score in minute 92. Ferdinand Jap-A-Joes’ slalom run took him past three defenders and into the box, but with the goal looming large ahead of him, the defender shot wide to leave the Surinamese left to ponder what might have been.
Barbados, meanwhile are left to ponder their path to the Finals of the Digicel Caribbean Championships, courtesy of their gutsy come from behind victory against Suriname.
