GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Suriname authorities have seized a Guyanese vessel that was traveling along the border between Guyana and Suriname just off the Corentyne coast

It is not clear the motive behind the seizure but according to reports the crew is in custody.

Guyana government through the foreign affairs ministry has confirmed that hat the Guyanese registered MV Lady Chandra 1 was seized by the Surinamese military at 13.30 hrs while travelling in the Corentyne River.

My Lady Chandra 1 has reportedly been boarded by the Suriname military and is being escorted by their vessels to the Surinamese port of Nickerie.

A release from Guyana’s ministry foreign affairs says this is the latest in the series that has seen continuous interventions by the Surinamese against Guyanese shipping in the Corentyne River.

Previously, Guyana had formally dispatched a diplomatic note protesting to the government of Suriname against such actions, but it has not been responded to

On September 17, 2007, a UN tribunal agreed that Guyana has a right to nearly 13,000 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean that had also been claimed by its neighbour, Suriname.

The Guyana/Suriname Arbitral Tribunal brought an end to the lengthy arbitration process between Guyana and Suriname, to delineate the maritime boundary between the two countries.

Guyana, in responding to this latest action, is closely monitoring this development and intends to take all necessary steps to safeguard its national interests.

Additionally, this most recent act of provocation is being drawn to the attention of the secretaries general of both the United Nations and CARICOM.
