Walters said numerous people called the VITEMA offices to report having felt the quake, which occurred at 6:40 a.m.
“According to information compiled at the offices of the US Geological Survey in Puerto Rico, the quake was located at 19.15 degrees north and 64.81 degrees west or about 55 miles North of Charlotte Amalie, 55 miles north northwest of Roadtown, Tortola,” Walters said.
The VITEMA director used the opportunity to remind residents of the need “to always be prepared in the event of an earthquake…know where you are and be able to quickly decide what is the safest place to seek shelter.”
He added that VITEMA offers a number of publications and other information that is available to the public about seismic activity and being prepared for any such natural disaster.
The territory has been in the process of implementing additional measures to prepare citizens for earthquakes and tsunami activity in recent years, particularly since the 2004 tsunami in India. | | | | Reads : 1321 | | | |
