ST JOHN'S, Antigua: Negotiations on the Declaration of Commitment for the Fifth Summit of the Americas - due to be hosted by Trinidad and Tobago on April 17-19, 2009 - will resume in Antigua and Barbuda on October 15 - 17, 2008 at the Fourth Regular Meeting of the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG).

The Draft Declaration was presented by Trinidad and Tobago at the Second Regular Meeting of the SIRG in Washington, DC on July 24, 2008.

National Coordinator of the Fifth Summit, Ambassador Luis Alberto Rodriguez, said there have so far been "enthusiastic discussions" on the Draft Declaration and "a clear indication that the countries of the hemisphere are prepared to actively engage the difficult issues of our time."

The theme of the Summit is: "Securing or Citizens' Future by Promoting Human Prosperity, Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability."

Ambassador Rodriguez said the focus of the current round of negotiations is on "the critical elements of human prosperity that continue to challenge us in this part of the world."

The Draft Declaration addresses the theme of Human Prosperity by focusing on the goals of greater equity, inclusion and social development.

Ambassador Rodriguez said the Fifth Summit will set an agenda for action and change that "has the potential to make significant inroads into the manner in which we deal collectively with matters of growing concern to our people."

Future meetings of the SIRG during the course of 2008 will be on November 13 and14 in Washington D.C, and on December 11 and 12 in El Salvador.
