PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: The Deputy Leader of the Opposition United National Congress (UNC), Kamla Persad-Bissessar has accused Prime Minister Patrick Manning of a deliberate plot to destablise the UNC in government by a concerted and deliberate attack on the leader of the UNC.

In a strongly worded statement, the former Attorney General pointed out that the removal of the political leader of the UNC, Basdeo Panday from the House as well as the government voting Panday out must be viewed as part of this overall strategy.

Panday was suspended from the House for using his laptop when ordered not to do so by the Speaker.

The statement added: "I am saddened though, that in order to achieve his political objective of attacking me, as Deputy Political Leader of the UNC, the Prime Minister stooped to character assassination by innuendo and implication.”

Manning said in the House during the debate that Persad-Bissessar had inappropriate access to the files of the Integrity Commission.

The Opposition MP said in response that she believed the Prime Minister "clearly believes that he has the power to protect law breakers. This is a dangerous and frightening situation, as it points to the potential abuse of power”.

She added: "I am a firm believer that if someone is guilty of a crime, then he or she should face the consequence, and if the Prime Minister is using his office to protect people from prosecution for crimes they have committed, then he is committing a crime and should be prosecuted for it.”
