CASTRIES, St Lucia: This week in St Lucia there was the usual parade and ceremony, following which Governor General, Dame Pearlette Louisy inspected the guard of honour before delivering the Throne Speech.
In delivering the Throne Speech, the Governor General outlined the policies that the United Workers Party Government intends to pursue during the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament of St Lucia and the legislative measures that will be introduced in the development of these objectives.
Then, while St Lucians anxiously waited for an announcement regarding China-Taiwan relations, the Governor General went on to explain that the government is willing to offer the hand of friendship with all peoples and has no desire to be embroiled in any diplomatic conflicts.
She also mentioned the fact that there had been 13 years of diplomatic relations with Taiwan but, with the change of government in 1997, relations with Taiwan were severed and replaced with the People's Republic of China.
The Governor General also articulated that the government is of the firm belief that a mere change of government should not be reason enough to sever diplomatic ties with any country. Hence the government has sought to have open dialogue with a number of countries, including Taiwan.
Dame Pearlette Louisy said the government will make a definitive statement on China-Taiwan relations in due course.
