GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: Two days after Hurricane Ike made landfall in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Net News media group produced, printed and delivered a post hurricane special edition of Turks and Caicos Net News.

Cayman Net News photo-journalist Trent Jacobs, who brought the newspapers from Miami to Providenciales on Tuesday afternoon, said he was almost mobbed when he arrived at the airport by people anxious to get the first printed hard news and pictures of the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike.

The new publication was donated to the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands by the Net News group, who absorbed the full cost of production and delivery.

According to one report, copies of the complimentary publication were flying out of the newsstands at the IGA supermarket in Provo like “hot cakes.”

Efforts will be made on Wednesday to distribute copies throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands subject to the availability of air transportation.

Desmond Seales, Publisher and Editor in Chief of the Net News publications, said, “We knew from our experience of the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan in the Cayman Islands in 2004, that many people welcomed the arrival of the first newspaper, not only for its content, but also for the fact that it represented tangible evidence that life was returning to normalcy.”

“We are, therefore, glad to be able provide this service to the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands as part of the recovery process,” he added.

The special post-hurricane edition of Turks and Caicos Net News may be viewed in its entirety online at www.tcinetnews.com/ads/ and daily news updates from the TCI may be found as usual at www.tcinetnews.com.
