GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Guyana’s President Bharat Jagdeo has invited a international and local team of top level trade, economics and academia for discussions on the Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Union.

Jagdeo, who is not in favour of some of the clauses in the EPA agreement, is seeking advice with experts in the field at a conference being held Friday and Saturday at the International Convention Centre

The EPA, a trade agreement between the European Union and Caribbean Community (Caricom) nations plus the Dominican Republic, should have been signed last Tuesday, but was postponed because at least three countries and prominent regional academics have raised concerns about its implications for the region.

Caricom Secretary General Edwin Carrington has summoned a meeting of Heads of Government on Wednesday in Barbados to discuss the issues facing member countries with the hope of ironing out the differences.
