GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Three of fifteen school children perished when fire gutted a dormitory of a secondary school in Guyana's interior, at Waramadong Secondary School in Region Seven, Cuyunu/Mazaruini.

The fire, which started from a lighted candle, gutted one of the three dormitories of the secondary school located at the village of Kubenag, some 150 miles from the capital city Georgetown.

The tragedy struck the night before the opening of the new school year at the largest secondary school in the district.

The bodies of the three students, Zenita Sam,12, Sharmalaza George, 12, and Savyline David, 14, were burnt beyond recognition. Reports state that they were sleeping when the fire started. The 12 other students who were in the building at the time escaped. Only one received minor burns.

Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, Local Government Minister Kellowan Lall and Minister in the Ministry of Education Desrey Fox flew up to the area and tried to consove the parents of the children.

Baksh announced that the opening for that school, which accommodated 400 students from several villages outside the district, will be postponed for a week.
