GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Guyana’s Police Commissioner Henry Greene has said that the shooting death of Rondell “Fineman” Rawlins would have an impact on the investigations into the murder of the eight persons at the Lindo Creek Mining Camp two months ago.

He promised, however, that the investigations would still continue until the police could clear the air on who was responsible for the slaying.

The Rawlins gang has been fingered in the shooting and burning of eight persons believed to be a mining crew in the Lindo Creek area, as well as the massacres in the Bartica and Lusignan areas and several other murders.

Last Thursday, however, Rawlins, another multiple murder accused, Jermaine Charles who had escaped from police custody, and Sean Grant, a man believed to have been supporting the gang, were shot and killed by security forces during an operation on the Linden Soesdyke Highway.

Since the death of Rawlins, who was considered to be the mastermind behind the gang, the question now being asked is whether investigators would be able to bring a closure to these and several other killings.

In response to these concerns, Greene said that the investigations would continue to bring closure to the killings, all of which he said he was 100 percent sure that Rawlins was responsible for.

However, Greene added that the death of Rawlins and most of the prominent gang members would have an impact in the investigations.

“‘Fineman’ is not the only one that was there [Lindo Creek, Bartica and Lusignan]; there were others too. But based on our records all those that were believed to be responsible for the killings are now dead,” Greene said. “But the investigations will continue because we need to let the relatives know who was really behind these killings.”

Meanwhile, when asked whether security forces were concerned about the remaining surviving men believed to be members of the gang, Greene said that he was optimistic that the death of Rawlins would send a message to the others.
