GEORGETOWN, Guyana: The Alliance for Change (AFC), the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and the main opposition People’s National Congress Reform(PNC/R) have all issued statements commending the Joint Services in bringing to an end the reign of Rondell ‘Fineman’ Rawlins and Jermaine ‘Skinny’ Charles.

The AFC leader Raphael Trotman said that the Joint Services should be commended for their success in putting an end to the criminal reign of Rondell Rawlins, whom he said had left a dent in the heart of many Guyanese when he wantonly took the lives of their loved ones.

“The first thing to do is to commend the Joint Services for their success. Undoubtedly they have been the subject of much criticism over the past few months and this latest success will give them a boost in morale and confidence,” Trotman said. “However we have been saying and will continue to say that not withstanding the individual success, the root cause of crime in Guyana, the most vicious types that leads to massacre is still not being addressed.”

Trotman said that he and his party were still concerned about the youths living in depressed communities who used AK47s to confront the country’s security forces. He called for more social, political and economic focus since the driving force behind this phenomenon still needed to be addressed.

Meanwhile, PPP General Secretary Donald Ramotar shared similar sentiments and called on the nation’s youth not to head in the same direction as Rawlins and his accomplices.

“I would like to congratulate the security forces for getting the leader of the criminal gang which was one of the most feared Guyana the history of this country,” said Rawlins. “I would like to also say that the bringing to an end the confrontation in which ‘Fineman’ [Rondell Rawlins] and Skinny [Jermaine Charles] lost their lives is an example to many young people who were probably taken in by the romanticism of some of the things they [Rawlins and Charles] were doing so that the old saying crime don’t pay is really true.”

Ramotar said that he was hopeful that the deaths of these men would bring some relief to the relatives of those who died at the hands of these criminals.

The PNCR in a statement acknowledged the success of the Joint Services in the killing of the wanted men, who have been identified as the perpetrators of a number of heinous crimes.

“The death of these two wanted men is hailed as a significant blow to the criminal gangs,” the statement said. “The PNCR is convinced that their death should contribute to the attenuation of the tensions within the society and should open new opportunities to address the crime situation in Guyana.”

The PNCR said that it saw the killings of the men as an opportunity to create the necessary space for the Government to develop and aggressively pursue an all-embracing, comprehensive national security plan to eradicate the root causes of crime.

“We believe that in the medium to long term only the successful implementation of such a plan will provide Guyana with a security environment conducive to peace, stability and development,” the statement from PNCR headquarters said.

The PNCR added that it wished to reaffirm its unequivocal support for the fight against crime in all its forms and in all quarters of the society.
