Letter: Jamaica, Olympics and crime

Published on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

The 29th Olympiad in Beijing, China has come to an end. Jamaicans from all walks of life are basking in the glory of 11 medals, Jamaica's best showing ever.

There is a great deal of goodwill, love, brotherhood in the air. Hooray for Jamaica. Jamaicans were riveted to their television sets and I am hoping from my vantage point here in Barbados that this would have made a difference to the astronomical crime rate in Jamaica.

Now that the Olympic games are over I suspect that Jamaicans will have a lot of free time on their hands. And the old saying is "The Devil finds work for idle hands". I suspect that Jamaicans will return to their national pastime with relish. That is, murdering each other in large numbers.

I do hope that I am wrong and the love exhibited during the Olympics will redound to a dramatic decrease in the murder rate this year in Jamaica. If that happens then I would consider that a greater achievement than Bolt's record sprints.

Just remember that they were thousands and thousands of Jamaicans who could not watch the 29th Olympiad because their lives were cut short by gunmen and other villains in Jamaica.
