SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic: Haitian rights activist Sonia Pierre has repeated her allegations that the Dominican Republic population discriminates against Haitians residing here.

"The Offices of the Civil Registrar is also being discriminatory, in that there are a series of birth certificates that are going to be and are being nullified,” she said.

When interviewed, Pierre said Dominicans of Arabian, Italian, Spanish or American ancestry "don’t undergo" those obstacles to obtain their documents.

She also accused the State of having "double standards" on how to face what they call a peaceful invasion of Haitians. She said that while their presence is criticised, hundreds of Haitians are being contracted to work in farms and sugarcane plantations.

Pierre said that whenever two or three thousand Haitians are needed in the sugar mills, they resort to the petty recruiters who contract them with the authorities’ knowledge, “and nothing happens. That is having double standards.”
