BRADES, Montserrat -- On October 31, 2009, Montserrat will host the 15th Annual Open Fishing Tournament at Little Bay. A joint effort by the Montserrat Tourist Board and the Montserrat Fisherman’s Cooperative, the event is an opportunity to showcase the island’s pristine sport-fishing conditions while giving anglers the chance to show off their skills and compete to reel in the biggest catch and earn the loudest bragging rights.

"We have been pleased with the turn-out over the past few years and hope this year will be bigger and even more action packed than the last,” said Director of Tourism Ernestine Cassell. "Anglers of all levels will find Montserrat's annual tournament to be a challenging yet thrilling and rewarding experience."

Prizes for the best catch will be given in seven categories including Kingfish, Wahoo, Tuna and Mahi Mahi. The boat with the heaviest catch will receive the champion prize of EC$2,500 (approximately US$936). A special bonus prize of EC$1,500 (approximately US$561) will be awarded to anyone that breaks existing records. Past record catches include a 71 lb. Wahoo (2003), a 302 lb. Marlin (1995), a 51 lb. Dolphin (1990), a 51 lb. King (1989) and 78 lb. Tuna (1989).

The entry fee is US$46 for each person on the boat. Boats can depart from the Port Little Bay any time after 4 a.m. or if coming from a nearby island, can fish along the way from their home port. Lines cannot be in the water until 5:30 a.m. and all boats must return by 3:30 p.m. to Little Bay for the weigh-in.

After the tournament, water sport enthusiasts looking for even more adventure can choose to kayak in the island’s pristine waters, snorkel through breathtaking reefs or dive and explore Montserrat’s underwater landscapes. Travelers looking to relax can bask under the sun on miles of glistening dark or white sand and enjoy a cool swim at one of Montserrat’s picturesque beaches.
