Montserrat to host first literary festival

BRADES, Montserrat -- The Montserrat Cultural Centre will be the venue of the island’s first ever Literary Festival to be held November 13-15, 2009. Known as the Alliouagana Festival of the Word, the festival will feature more than a dozen prize-winning and internationally recognized authors throughout the three-day event.
Starting Friday, November 13 at 6 p.m., literary enthusiasts and Montserratians returning home will be treated to a weekend of presentations, readings and signings by important authors including Austin Clarke, Merle Hodge, Rachel Manley, Pauline Melville and Montserrat’s own novelist and playwright Edgar Nkosi White.
Open-mic sessions coordinated by Professor Carolyn Cooper, workshops by experienced facilitators including Professor Funso Aiyejina and Cherise Davis Fisher, editor-in-chief at Plume, online arts and culture magazine, storytelling and dramatic presentations are all part of the activities planned for the weekend.
A calypso review to be led by Professor Gordon Rohlehr and a calypso extravaganza featuring songs from Montserrat’s past including the work of Arrow, internationally recognized King of Soca, will be part of the celebration of the word in its many manifestations.
During the three-day event, visitors will also have the opportunity to view the Soufriere Hills Volcano, explore Montserrat ’s slopes and mountainous vistas on the many hiking trails, catch a glimpse of the Montserrat Oriole while bird watching and tour the picturesque tropical landscape of the island.
