VIEUX FORT, St Lucia -- Jamaican athletes won 12-gold medals, including all four sprint relay titles on another dominating third day at the 38th Carifta Games at the George Odlum Stadium in St Lucia on Sunday.

A total of six records were broken on the third day, with Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago athletes accounting for them.

Sprint relay sweep for Jamaica

The Jamaicans, after a very productive individual outing throughout the day, swept the 4x100m relay events and set two championships records in the process.

Both the U17 boys and girls captured gold medals in record breaking fashion.

On the girls’ side, the Jamaicans clocked a blistering 45.05 seconds for gold ahead of Trinidad and Tobago (46.44) and Bahamas (47.04). The boys’ team were just as impressive, winning in a record time of 40.76 to outpace the Bahamians (41.89) and Barbados (42.18).

In the U20 section, the girls posted 45.04secs to beat Bahamas and Trinidad who came home in respective times of 45.43 and 46.97. On the boys’ side, Jamaica ran a quick 40.05 to outclass a strong looking Barbados, at 40.62, and Martinique (40.82).

Good hurdles results

Earlier in the day, Janieve Russell and Nikita Tracey won gold medals for Jamaica in the girls U17 and U20 hurdles competition.

Russell, the U17 Long Jump champion and High Jump bronze medallist, was outstanding in her race – winning in a championships record time of 41.30, which bettered Jamaican Patricia Hall’s 1998 previous record of 41.33.

Sade Greenidge of Barbados ran 42.81 for second, with third going to Aimee Adamis in 43.21.

Tracey claimed the U20 400m hurdles crown with a 57.79 run. She beat teammate Danielle Dowie (57.88) and Barbados’ Latoya Griffith (59.05).

In the Boys’ section, Trinidadian Jehue Gordon and Barbadian Tramaine Maloney made sure the Jamaicans did not have things their own way.

Gordon erased Jamaican Gregory Little’s seven-year-old mark of 50.85 on his way to winning the U20 race in a new record of 50.01 seconds.

Leslie Murray of the USA Virgin Islands, the bronze medallist in the open 400m, ran 51.20 for silver, with Jamaican Dwayne Extol taking third in 52.34.

Maloney took the U17 race with a nice 54.88 run that pushed him ahead of Bahamian Patrick Bodie (55.48) and Jamaican Kyle Robinson (55.59).
