Letter: Vincentians wake up

Published on Wednesday, October 21, 2009Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

I have been receiving calls from as far as Germany from people I do not even know about what is going in St Vincent; this is my home land and I am very, very worried about the possibilities. I grew up in a home where my parents were very, political. One of my brothers at the age of 17 was knocked off the PPP platform and ended up with a broken cheekbone in the late 60s. Some Labour Party supporter broke his cheekbone throwing stones at ET Joshua during a political street meeting in Layou; I was very young at the time. Duff James and Owen Walker were very close political friends of my family.

My brother was murdered by the daughter of a hardline supporter of the Labour Party and never spent any time in jail for this heinous crime; my brother was only 24 at the time. I come from the political stable of ET Joshua until James Mitchell formed the New Democratic Party. I never flipped flopped all over the place, my support was always grounded and solid in one party. The first vote I was able to cast in my life when I attained the voting age went to the NDP.

The criminal was given a clean police record to get a visitor's visa for the USA. Recently her last sibling died under very strange circumstances in the US, retribution caught up with the entire family, the death penalty was too good for them as punishment for the crime they committed. I lived to see them suffer and wallow in their own guilt for my brother's death.

I have been a victim of the corrupt justice system in SVG and can testify to this corruption. The only witness to the crime was sent away without giving any evidence. False witnesses were brought to testify; this murder was never investigated. Does anyone understand how painful this was for a very young girl, sitting in court listening to false accusations? Some things will go with me to my grave and this is one of them.

We see today under the Labour Party administration crimes going unpunished because of who you are and not what you do. How can see live with these serious issues and not speak up, how? How can we live with all that advantage taken on poor people who cannot defend themselves? Who is going to stand up for them? Mrs Dennie's land was taken over by the Government; tell me if she was paid the current market value for her land? Who is listening to her cry? If these people do not end up in hell I do not know who will.

How can we say that the Referendum is fair to our people? The people who advocate for it are all living well. When will we see justice for the poor and downtrodden, when? Only when we vote “NO” on November 25.

We cannot be sympathetic to the wicked, those who have no mercy on the poor and needy, and those who do not condemn injustice. We must fight for our right with all our might, do not give up Vincentians, this is our chance to a victory for our democracy.

Vincentians stand up and be counted, stand up and speak out. We must unite to fight the wicked and hard hearted. We must unite to win. A little more oil in your lamp keep it burning, a little more oil in your lamp I pray, a little more oil in your lamp keep it burning, keep it burning till Referendum day.
