St Lucia Ministry of Health confirms first H1N1 influenza death

CASTRIES, St Lucia -- The Ministry of Health in St Lucia has confirmed the first H1N1 related death. The individual was a 45 year old male with no pre-existing medical conditions. The patient had remained at home for several days while suffering from severe respiratory symptoms, before he sought medical attention. He died soon after receiving treatment and being admitted to hospital.

Persons are reminded that individuals with pre existing medical condition such as pregnancy, diabetes and lung disease are at very high risk for developing severe complications after being infected with H1N1influenza.

Individuals with persistent flu symptoms should seek medical care immediately, at the nearest Health Center or other health facility. The public is also reminded that although most persons who acquire H1N1Influenza have only mild flu-like symptoms and recover within one week, some persons may develop more severe illness which may lead to death if not treated in a timely and aggressive manner.

Persons with flu like symptoms should cover their cough and remain away fromwork, school or public places for at least one week after seeking medical attention.
