Dengue fever outbreak in Tobago

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Tobago has reported the worst outbreak of dengue fever in years.

County Medical Officer of Health, Dr Mentor Melville disclosed that there are eight confirmed cases of the disease in Tobago between east and west.

The Trinidad Express reported that the Medical Officer of Health also disclosed that there are 41 suspected cases that were treated at Scarborough Regional Hospital and the authorities are now awaiting the results from blood samples that were sent to the government laboratory in Port of Spain.

There was also an unconfirmed report that a German tourist who spent some time in Spreyside went back to Tobago this week because he tested positive for the fever.

The quick tests, which showed the positive results, were done at the Scarborough hospital over the past few days.

The Public Health Department under Melville on Tuesday night launched an island wide health education programme to sensitise the public on the steps to be taken to prevent dengue,

The symptoms of dengue fever include sudden onset of fever, severe headaches, muscle and joint pains, rash and pruritus of palms and soles.
