GEORGETOWN, Guyana -- Three Guyana Defence Force (GDF) members, including an officer, are under close arrest after they were found with three drums of suspected smuggled fuel at the Parika Stelling on Sunday, a police release said.

Local police say, acting on information, ranks intercepted a boat with the soldiers onboard at the Stelling which contained the suspected illegal fuel.

A senior GDF officer said the detainees had made an unauthorized trip from the GDF Coastguard Base in Region One, and were in possession of the fuel, four cellular phones, one GPS device, and GY$116,000.(US$580)

Meanwhile, a GDF statement said the soldiers aroused the suspicion of the police after they reportedly were asking for directions to Parika while on the Essequibo River.

The release said that at the time of the incident one of the ranks was armed with his service pistol and five rounds of matching ammunition.

Residents alerted the police and the soldiers were detained.

The pistol and the other items are in GDF custody.

The army Chief Commodore Gary Best has since ordered their criminal arrest and said charges will be laid shortly.

Members of the GDF in recent months have been accused of being embroiled in a series of criminal activities and were accused of several high sea murders and robbery including a Bartica businessman less than two months ago.
