Records to be broken during Grenada round-the-island race

ST GEORGES, Grenada: Horizon Region Guadelope hopes to claim victory of the Grenada Round-the-Island Race and set a new time record. The current record was set in 2003 by Roger Spronk on Huff ‘N’ Puff with a time of 5 hrs and 40 min. Currently Horizon Region Guadelope holds several records including fastest time Round St Martin, Round St Bart’s, Round Guadelope and Round Martinique.

John Burnie has been chartering the vessel from Claude Theilier along with a team of super yacht captains (From Mirabella V, Hyperion, Ranger, Narida). He set the multihull record for the new RORC Caribbean 600 Race with a time of 40 hrs, 11 min, and 5 sec.

Horizon Region Guadelope
A little history on the fastest boat in the Caribbean-the yacht was built as Primagaz and won the Route du Rhum twice under the Skipper Laurent Bourgon. It is a first generation Orma 60 Class Trimaran and the first to have a rotating wing mast.

The yacht is now owned by Claude Thelier for Guadeloupe (World Champion in Hobie Cat). He competed in the last Route du Rhum finishing 8th. This was a great result as he beat a number of brand new second generation ORMA 60’s including the brand new Gitana.

Sailors are invited to compete in the one day sailing event which launches at St George’s Harbour at 8 am on March 14. Registration, a skipper’s briefing and a cocktail party will be held on Friday evening, March 13 at Port Louis.

Free dockage at Port Louis on Friday and Saturday evening is provided for any boat entering the race as well as a plentiful breakfast served at 6:30 am the morning of the race sponsored by Real Value Supermarket.
