Worst of Guadeloupe's crisis over, says French president

PARIS, France (AFP): French President Nicolas Sarkozy judged Saturday that the worst of the protests and rioting in Guadeloupe was over, but said much needed to be done to address the discontent roiling the Caribbean island.

"Negotiations are under way. I hope they will be completed and that everyone understands that demands are not satisfied through violence but rather through calm, dialogue and serenity," Sarkozy told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of an annual agricultural fair outside Paris.
Sarkozy has offered millions of euros in new subsidies to help end weeks of protests over low pay and the high cost of living in Guadeloupe, where unemployment and poverty rates are far higher than on mainland France.
Strike leaders agreed Thursday to resume negotiations with the government, amid fears the unrest could further spread to France's other overseas territories. | | | | Reads : 1552 | | | |
