NEW YORK, USA -- Grenada wants to enhance anti-corruption cooperation with countries around the world, according to Social Security Minister Karl Hood.

The Grenadian Minister, accompanied by Sgt Zephrine Charles of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), was among participants at the Second Corruption-Prevention Workshop for Developing Countries which ended in Beijing, China on Sunday.

He said that the workshop discussed among other things, the root cause of corruption and measures to curb instances, especially among public officials.

Hood said that government attaches great importance to anti-corruption, and takes it as an important political task that concerns the winning or losing of public support and the future of Grenada.

He also suggested the setting up of an agency to deal with corruption.

“When I looked at what has happened to our country over the years, there is absolutely need for an anti-corruption agency, to ensure that public officials do what is right and public officials are not engaged in corrupt activities,” Hood said adding that even if they are engaged there are mechanisms in place to deal with it and deal with it swiftly.

Grenada was the only Caribbean country among the 18 developing nations of Asia, Africa and Central America invited to participate in the one-week workshop.

Secretary-General of the State Council Ma Kai addressed the closing ceremony where he said that the Chinese government is ready to explore ways of anti-corruption with other nations on the basis of mutual respect and emphasis on real effectiveness.

The workshop was sponsored by China’s National Bureau of Corruption Prevention, Ministry of Commerce and National School of Administration.
