Letter: Grenada's education system

Published on Monday, September 7, 2009Email To Friend    Print Version

Dear Sir:

The letter written by Mr Hudson George of Toronto, Ontario, Canada isn't a true representation of the facts. The letter written relating to the education system in Grenada in no way suggested that the system is worse off now than in the past. It was only an analysis of the situation of the education system highlighting some of the weaknesses in the system and also some of the strengths.

Mr Hudson is not on island and as such is not in a position to represent the situation as it really exist.

Mr Hudson apparently has some issues with certain individuals and is using this forum to try to settle scores. The references made to Cuba and Barbados were primarily made to bring to the public attention the enormous strides made in education in this two Caribbean islands and the facts are there to prove just that. The fact remains that Barbados has one of the highest literacy rates in the world and Cuba's achievement in education is a model for all to be jealous of.

Whatever allegations that Mr Hudson thinks he can make about the Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines is his prerogative. The fact is the Prime Minister of St.Vincent and the Grenadines is a true Caribbean intellectual and patriot and is doing an excellent job as Prime Minister of that country. His educational revolution is an excellent initiative. St Vincent and the Grenadines now have a large amount of its citizens attending the Universities of the West Indies and other Universities around the world. Over 300 teachers are receiving training and schools are being built all over the mainland St Vincent and the Grenadines. That is the vision of Dr Ralph Gonsalves.

Mr Hudson's time would have been better spent if he had used the opportunity to organize and ship some much needed school supplies and equipment to the needy students in Grenada ,Carriacou and Petite Martinique. If Mr Hudson thinks that he has a positive contribution to make towards the development of education in Grenada, he can contact The Hon Franca Bernadine Minister of Education or any member of her staff. Mrs Bernadine will be more than glad to have a decent conversation with him.

The people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique voted for change on July 8th 2008 , and one of the areas that will be changed for the good of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique in our education system. The new curriculum developed by the Ministry of Education , the free schools books program and the youth skills training program are just a few of the many initiative currently undertaken by the Ministry Of Education all aim at transforming our education system and bringing benefits to our people.

What Mr Hudson failed to realised is that the critical thinking , maturity , attitude , values and development of a people depends primarily on the level of education that they possess. The new minister of education appreciates this and is working extremely hard to ensure that the people of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique receive the quality of education that we so rightly deserved. There can be no real democracy and freedom of speech and expression without Education.

As a true patriot Mr Hudson must realised that my country Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique come first and I will all within my powers to defend the integrity of this bless tri-island state. My navel string bury right here, Sir and the development and growth of this small Caribbean is upper most in my mind.

Forward match to a bright future in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique . Education for One , Education for All.

Forward Ever,
Backward Never.
