Dear Sir:
I felt the need to respond to Suzanne Dyer, the boater who was assaulted while anchored in Dominican waters ["Letter: Important information relating to Dominica", September 24, 2009]. I don't mean to minimise Mrs Dyer's plight, but the link she provided leads to regional criminal statistics that simply don't support her claim of Dominica as a dangerous locale.
According to this information, there were five incidents in the last five years that involved violence against boaters. Two were in 2009, and as she mentioned, of the three perpetrators two are already facing justice for their actions. Before this one must go all the way to 2006 to find another single incident. And prior to that there were two back in 2005, the latter of which also led to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.
Obviously, an average of even one violent crime per year against boaters is one more than we should like. But it's clear that when incidents do occur that our police service is taking them seriously, and considering the healthy number of yachts that visit us each year, that there are so few incidents should not be alarming, but instead reassuring.
