ST JOHN’S, Antigua: A number of doctors, who graduated in Cuba and have been denied registration in Antigua and Barbuda, are moving to the courts for a declaration for them to be enrolled as medical practitioners.

The Antigua Sun reported that the Antigua and Barbuda Medical Registration Board (MRB) refused to register the documents because, according to the Chairman of the MRB, David Dorset, the requirements were not satisfied that they could practice medicine by themselves.

Additionally Dorset said the applicants had not proven their entitlement to practice medicine in another country. Therefore, they would not be registered in Antigua and Barbuda under the Medical Act.

The doctors argue, however, that a document given to every student who graduates with a degree in medicine from a Cuban university certifying that the medical doctor degree entitles the holder to "practice as a general doctor throughout the territory of Cuba" was submitted with each application.

Spokesperson for the doctors, Darren Ephraim, said, "If the Board really reviewed the applications, they would have seen those documents. But, since the decision, the MRB has not got in touch with myself or anyone else," adding that the refusal to register is totally absurd.

Ephraim said the doctors are also frustrated by the way they have seemingly been ignored and are not ruling out political involvement in their plight.

He added that the doctors were reluctant to take legal action, but they have no other choice.

They have already consulted attorneys and legal proceedings will be instituted.
