LONDON, England: Reggae Boyz striker Deon Burton has received high praise for his recent performance, which is helping Sheffield Wednesday to step up their quest for points in the English Coca-Cola Football League Championship.
Burton hit his third goal in four games when he scored the equalliser against Burnley on Saturday and manager Brian Laws believes the Jamaican is currently in the "top drawer."
"Deon has kicked on," Laws said. "I thought that overall he was our best player. His reliability was top drawer. It caused Burnley all sorts of problems, aerially and when he had the ball at his feet.
"That's the kind of performance we know he's capable of. The fact that he has chipped in with a goal as well will give him a huge lift. Let's hope he scores a few and continues that form in the next few games."
After going down in the 55th minute, Wednesday and Burton stepped up the pace and were rewarded with an equallising goal three minutes later. Burton headed home a corner from Chris Brunt from close range to made sure his team stayed in the running.
Burton's latest run of success now sees him move up to seven goals this season, the same as strike partner Marcus Tudgay and one below Chris Brunt and Steve MacLean who are on with eight, and he believes the team can use Saturday's draw at Burnley as the foundation after ending their losing spell.
"We can take loads of confidence from it. It was good to nip it in the bud," Burton told the club's website.
"I think we dominated most of the game and were unlucky not to win. I though it might be one of those days once they scored but the boys kept at it and we got a point.
"It is a little bit frustrating to have no game this weekend because the boys are buzzing and everyone is cheerful around the training ground. But we have an extra few days to train and work things out."
Wednesday currently sit at 13th position in the table on 41-points. Burton's former club Derby County is leading the pack with 63 points.
