GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Caribbean wireless telecommunications operator Digicel is unveiling its brand in Guyana, a market it entered in October 2006, through the acquisition of Cel*Star, a company that had struggled to compete with the long-standing, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T).

Digicel is investing over US$60 million to build up its network and to expand services. Chief Executive Officer Tim Bahrani told the media that the company intends to expand the subscriber base from 22 percent to 50 percent. Close to fifty stores will open their doors to unveil the Digicel brand, offering a wide array of deals to consumers.

“We are committed to expanding to more and more communities and becoming the mobile operator of choice in Guyana. The welcome we have received from the Guyanese people has been fantastic and we are looking forward to becoming an active participant in local communities,” Baharani said.

He added that 18,000 persons will benefit from direct unemployment, in addition to the company’s increased involvement in sports and culture. Digicel will offer per-second billing and a wide rage of brand new hand sets.

Currently, Digicel has in excess of four million subscribers and operations in 22 markets including Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Bermuda, Bonaire, The Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, El Salvador, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, St Kitts & Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Turks and Caicos and Trinidad & Tobago.

Digicel directly employs more than 3,000 people.
