Latin American officials to discuss UN force in Haiti

LIMA, Peru (AFP): Latin American officials will meet in Lima Monday to discuss their countries' participation in the United Nations stabilisation force in Haiti.

Deputy foreign and deputy defense ministers will express support for the Brazilian-led UN mission (MINUSTAH), which deployed to Haiti in 2004 after then president Jean Bertrand Aristide fled the country amid a popular uprising, Peru's foreign ministry said.

The officials will exchange information on the Latin American participation in the 8,400-strong military and police force, the ministry said. They will also discuss regional cooperation to help develop Haiti's economy and institutions.

Representatives from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Panama will participate in the meeting.

The UN's special envoy for Haiti, Edmond Mulet, and Organization of American States chief Jose Miguel Insulza will also attend the meeting.
