Trinidadian Kirk says victory at Millrose was a thrilling moment

NEW YORK, USA: Trinidad and Tobago's Sheridan Kirk has said that his win in the men's 800-metres at the Millrose Games in New York on Friday was a thrilling moment for him, while adding that the pace of the opening laps was a sizable contribution to his victory.

Kirk capatilised on a slow opening 400m pace to win the race in a time of 1:53.01 - getting the better of his more experienced competitors in the home-straight sprint.

"It was a pretty good race. The race ran in my favour. We came through the quarter slow. I knew once we were that slow, it would be a sprint to come home and I know I'm pretty good at that," Kirk said.

"I was expecting a little more of a push at the start. In the 800, it's about experience. This is my first time at Millrose. It is a great experience. I love the atmosphere, and hopefully next year I'll be back."

The Trinidadian, who was also a notable competitor during his collegiate year at Auburn University, defeated American 2003 World Indoor champion David Krummenacker, who crossed the line at 1:53.23, Kenyan Justus Koech, at 1:53.69 and Jebreh Harris of USA, at 1:53.71.

Despite his winning performance, Kirk will certainly be looking to improve on his time, especially with the top-ten runners this year already going under the 1:49 barrier.

Kenya’s Wilfred Bungei currently leads the world with a time of 1:45.72, the only runner to dip below the 1:46 roadblock this indoor season.

Another Trinidadian runner Kelly Ann Baptiste won the college women’s 60m dash in a time of 7.31secs.
