LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Ms Petrusi posits a very provocative question

Monday, February 5, 2007

Dear Sir:

My question to Mr Hall is:  What is the appropriate moral attitude to take when we try to understand the ways in which another has been the victim of social injustice?” [Linda Petrusi]

Ms Petrusi posits a very provocative question, and one that it behooves all of us to grapple with.  But where I have no compunction about commenting on the legal approach we should take when dealing with victims of social injustice, I cannot possibly comment on what moral attitude is appropriate in this regard.

It suffices for me – as a legal proposition - to defend the inalienable right of every human being to be treated equally under the law - regardless of race, gender, or creed.   And even though my moral compass might compel my legal zealousness, I am loath to suggest that others should be similarly guided.

As a point of personal privilege, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Ms Petrusi to Caribbean Net News as a fellow columnist.  Her articles contribute to the diversity of opinion that I believe is invaluable in our public debates.

Anthony L. Hall
