Guyana legislatively and logistically set for CWC 2007

Saturday, February 3, 2007

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (GINA): With approximately 36 days remaining for the opening ceremony of the International Cricket Council’s Cricket World Cup 2007 (ICC/CWC), Guyana says that it has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that every aspect of its preparedness is intact.

By the end of January the physical works on the stadium were recorded as being 99 percent complete while all other aspects were said to be well advanced.

Addressing the National Assembly on January 31, Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony said that his Ministry has been working closely with all associated agencies to ensure that Guyana remains geared for the hosting of the mega event.

He outlined that with the exception of minor works on the parking lot and the internal fence, the stadium is substantively completed and ready to be handed over to the ICC/CWC officials by mid-February.

Anthony also said that accommodation capacity is adequate and no major problems are expected in this area.

The match officials have already been assured accommodation from the Buddy’s Hotel which features 250 rooms and 49 additional rooms from the Casique Hotel.

This, he said, will be further complemented by an additional 1,500 rooms which have been secured through the Bed & Breakfast Programme.

The passing of four Bills by the National Assembly on January 31 has ensured that Guyana is legislatively prepared for the event.

The Caribbean Community Special Visa Agreement Bill, Pre-Clearance (ICC/CWC 2007) Bill, Immigration (Amendment) Bill and Customs (Amendment) Bill, collectively provide legislative support for enhanced security and hassle free travel for Inter-Regional travel within the newly established Single Domestic Space.
