Trinidad High Commissioner's residence in Jamaica damaged by fire

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: Fire is reported to have damaged the official residence of the Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner in Jamaica, Yvonne Gittens-Joseph.

The residence, located in the Jack's Hill neighbourhood of Kingston, where a number of heads of missions reside, had been unoccupied and had recently been vacated in preparation for re-building.

The fire occurred at around 10 o'clock on Tuesday night, destroying a section of the official residence.

Information reaching Trinidad indicates that the Jamaica Fire Service responded promptly to the call and was able to prevent damage to adjoining properties. There were also no reported injuries to anyone.

Speaking from her office in Jamaica, Gittens-Joseph praised the Jamaica Fire Service. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs proposes to fast-track proposals for the design and reconstruction of the official residence. An official investigation is also to be launched into the fire.
