Trinidad businesses send strong message to government over rising crime

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: The Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the largest private sector organisation representing businesses throughout the country, has delivered a strong worded message to the Patrick Manning-led administration and all parliamentarians to act now and address the spiralling crime situation in the country.

The Business Chamber is the latest organisation responding to a wave of criminal activities that has gripped the nation.

They say they have lobbied, recommended, met and spoken on the incidence of violent crime, but it continues unabated.

The Chamber is now demanding that the Manning-led government, including all parliamentarians, demonstrate by way of tangible and visible evidence that they are hearing the call from the business community.

The group wants passage of the DNA legislation and Police Reform Act, both of which have long been debated. They say this cannot be the subject of bargaining. To do this is to bargain with people's lives.

The group adds that the government should take whatever action is required to fulfill their duty to ensure the protection and security of all citizens.
