MOSCOW, Russia (AFP): Guyana's President Bharrat Jagdeo began a six-day visit to Russia on Sunday, the Kremlin said, with talks on investment by Russian aluminium giant RusAl in the South American nation likely to top the agenda.

Jagdeo will hold a brief meeting with President Vladimir Putin on Monday "to discuss development of political dialogue, an increase in trading and economic cooperation, (and) settling of Guyana's debts to the Russian Federation," the Kremlin press office said.

Jagdeo's talks with business circles in Russia will include "investment and production activity in Guyana by the RusAl company," the Kremlin added.

RusAl already mines bauxite in Guyana and Jagdeo has announced he will discuss the possibility of building a processing plant for millions of tonnes of the ore, which is the main source of aluminium.

Despite the meetings, Jagdeo's visit is private, the Kremlin said. He is scheduled to leave Moscow on February 2.
