Saturday, January 27, 2007

ROSEAU, Dominica: Well over 130 persons representing the Cabinet, the public sector, private sector, civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations were present for the official launch of Dominica’s Growth and Social Protection Strategy (GSPS) on Monday.

The GSPS provides the framework for Dominica’s economic and social policies up to 2010 and sets out the macroeconomic framework; the growth strategy including the enabling environment for private enterprise and sectoral strategies; and poverty reduction and social protection strategies.

The overall vision for Dominica as envisaged by the GSPS is a place characterised by a people empowered to contribute to their own well-being and that of the country through policies of government geared to facilitating an environment within which private enterprise can flourish to the benefit of its people.

The GSPS provides an overarching and strategic perspective on the management of Dominica’s economy into the medium-term, a perspective that is informed by fiscal and debt parameters and considerations of prudent national economic management.

The objectives of the Growth and Social Protection Strategy include :

  • The attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
  • A reduction in head count and household poverty (poor, indigent)
  • A reduction in unemployment and underemployment
  • The attainment of sustainable economic growth and development
  • A reduction in the country’s vulnerability to shocks; economic and natural disasters
  • An improvement in the effectives of social protection programmes
  • A reduction in HIV/AIDS
  • An improvement in environmental protection and sustainability
  • An improvement in the quality of life of the Carib People
  • Maintenance of fiscal prudence and debt sustainability

The public sector, the private sector, civil society and the wider society all have a role to play in the implementation of the GSPS. The Ministry of Finance and Planning will provide the leadership needed through the GSPS Steering Committee and the Planning and Public Investment Unit.
