BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Negotiations on a bilateral fishing agreement between Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago have resumed.
After a break of over three years, officials from the two countries met in Port-of-Spain this week for talks aimed at settling the dispute.
The substance of the discussions has not been made public.
The Barbados team was led by Deputy Prime Minister Mia Mottley and also included Minister of State in the Foreign Ministry, Kerrie Symmonds; Chief negotiator for fisheries, Sir Henry Forde; President of Barbados National
Union of Fisherfolk Organisations, Oliver Grant; immediate past President, Angela Watson; and officials of the Fisheries Division and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Trinidad’s Attorney General John Jeremy and its Foreign Minister, Arnold Piggott led Trinidad’s delegation.
Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago had agreed to the discussions following the decision of the international arbitral tribunal in the Hague, in April 2006, which ruled in their maritime and boundaries dispute.
The panel had urged the two to negotiate in good faith and conclude an agreement that will accord Barbados’ fisherfolk access to fisheries within the exclusive economic zone of the twin-island state.
