BVI chief minister welcomes hospital contract signing

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

ROAD TOWN, BVI: The Chief Minister of the British Virgin Islands, Dr Orlando Smith, has welcomed this week's signing of the contract for the start of construction work for the new Peebles Hospital.

Chief Minister Smith and Health Minister Ronnie Skelton signed the 63.9 million dollar contract with representatives of Mirsand-Carimex-Quantum on Monday.

The Chief Minister said the signing marks the end of one era in the life of the community and the beginning of a new one. He said once the work begins on the new hospital, something fundamental will change in the BVI.

"For a very long time we were a poor and isolated place, and more recently we have become a dynamic and developing community, but now, with this hospital standing as our greatest symbol, we will enter the third great era of the BVI - the era of empowerment and opportunity," Smith said.

"With this hospital, we complete the long national project of providing for our people the basic infrastructure of modern life, and with this structure in place, our people will finally be liberated to focus the full measure of their attention and energy to the task of personal fulfillment and self actualization," the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister said the hospital will require much hard work and commitment and they have long, hard days ahead.
