BVI Chief Minister to speak at Caribbean HIV/AIDS Summit

ROAD TOWN, BVI: British Virgin Islands Chief Minister, Dr Orlando Smith, has been invited to speak at the 2007 Caribbean Regional Summit on HIV/AIDS with members of the United States House of Representatives Congressional Caribbean Caucus.

The summit is being held on Sunday, January 21, in St Croix, US Virgin Islands, under the auspices of the Inter-American Economic Council, with the theme “The Economic Impact of HIV/AIDS on the Caribbean.” USVI Delegate to Congress Donna Christensen invited the Council to hold the meeting on St Croix. 

Topics to be discussed will be bringing attention to affordable treatments for HIV/AIDS to the Caribbean and the economic consequences of the disease for the region.

The Chief Minister is expected to address the summit on the importance of developing partnerships, while calling for more private sectors funding for various initiatives that are geared towards reducing incidence of the disease within the region.

Ministers of Health from across the Caribbean and the United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean will be among the Chief Minister’s audience at the summit.

Other speakers will include USVI Government representatives, CARICOM ministers, healthcare officials, representatives from the Organization of American States, and the Pan American Health Organisation.
