Guyana Cabinet ratifies Convention against TerrorismFriday, January 19, 2007GEORGETOWN, Guyana (GINA): Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary, Dr Roger Luncheon, said at a media briefing on Thursday that the Guyana Cabinet has considered the ratification of the Convention against Terrorism and agreed to its ratification.
He said, “Guyana will thus soon deposit the Instrument of Ratification at the Organisation of American States in Washington, DC. The convention aims to prevent, eliminate and punish terrorism in accordance with the provisions and measures outlined.” Luncheon said the ratification of the Convention calls on State parties to adopt a number of consequential actions, including legislative intervention necessary for the implementation of the provision of the Convention. Guyana, he said “would also have to subscribe to other international investments related to terrorism.” Additionally, the Cabinet Secretary said comprehensive international cooperation would have to be achieved for the functioning of the legal and regulatory framework to prevent, combat and eradicate the financing of terrorism. Permanent Secretary or the Ministry of Home Affairs, Angela Johnson has been appointed as the National Point of Contact. States that have ratified the Convention recognise the serious economic harm that results from terrorist acts and it is one of the factors that underscore the need for cooperation and the urgency of efforts for its eradicate terrorism.
