Six Haitians using fraudulent documents intercepted at BVI airport
01-18-2007
ROAD TOWN, BVI: The vigilance of immigration and surveillance officers at the Terrence B. Lettsome International Airport in the British Virgin Islands has been credited with the recent interception of six Haitians who attempted to enter the Territory with fraudulent documents.
Acting Chief Immigration Officer Malvern Brathwaite said six Haitian nationals were intercepted on Tuesday, 16 January after they tried to gain entry into the Territory with fraudulent St Lucian passports.
“They were detained along with two female persons who appeared to be St Lucian nationals,” he added.
The acting Chief Immigration Officer said the group arrived in the British Virgin Islands from St Lucia via Antigua. The department’s surveillance, he added, showed that the group was not booked in transit to any further destination.
Brathwaite noted that the department’s intelligence discovered that the intention was for the six Haitian nationals to be transported to the US Virgin Islands.
He said the BVI Immigration Department is serious about the issue of border security and will continue to do the necessary work to protect the Territory’s borders.
Tuesday’s interception was the first by the Immigration Department for 2007.
