BVI authorities apprehend US fugitive
01-17-2007
ROAD TOWN, BVI: The combined efforts of the British Virgin Islands Customs, the Immigration Department and the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force have resulted in the capture and apprehension of a United States citizen wanted in the US on a federal warrant.
According to the Comptroller of Customs Wade Smith, customs officers boarded the vessel, “Running Free”, where they apprehended Terry Netzloff, originally from the Detroit, Michigan area.
Smith explained that Netzloff, who they discovered had been overstaying in the BVI since November, is wanted by Michigan authorities on embezzlement charges. He is a former attorney and investment advisor, who has been charged with cheating several elderly persons out of their money.
Netzloff was transported to the United States Virgin Islands and handed over to the Customs Border Protection Agency, where he remains in custody.
Smith commended Assistant Comptroller of Customs Dean Fahie, who successfully led the Task Force in the apprehension, for their commitment to law enforcement and spoke highly of the joint venture between the government agencies.
He said the apprehension is in keeping with the Chief Minister’s Seven-Point Plan to fight crime and heighten surveillance of persons who are in the BVI illegally or have violated local laws in another way.
The vessel “Searcher”, used in this latest apprehension of a wanted man, was recently deployed by the Customs Department on January 5, 2007.
